From the yearly archives: 2011

One of my favorite websites is called WAHMsWINWorldwide.com, here is a list of some of their 2011 blog posts from savvy women entrepreneurs. Many of these women bloggers are moms who build their businesses from home while raising their children and creating a rhythm that helps them be successful and happy in both life and business.

Blog Article List

I have been so blessed in 2011 to see my dream of starting and co founding the WAHMs WIN organization with Tamyka Washington. Jamie Fleming is our secretary and the editor for this awesome blog. Take a look at these articles, several of them are from experts who we’ve interviewed on our podcast and featured on the blog.
In 2012, we’ll continue to have these features, which you can also find listed at:

Book Review and Book Club One Woman Can Make A Difference On Her Own GroundI have had the privilege of investing in and reading one of the best books I have ever read in my whole life, next to the Holy Bible. This kind of book truly is a National Treasure and demands that we call attention to it in a bigger way, which I’ll do by hosting a business book club. This 90-Day Book Club is now available for you to subscribe at BookClub.wahmswin.com

This totally EPIC book is called:

On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C.J. Walker by A’lelia Bundles Book Review and Book Club One Woman Can Make A Difference On Her Own Ground

Ms. A’lelia Bundles is both Madam C.J. Walker’s biographer and her great-great grand daughter. The research she has done (and is still doing for another family member’s biography) was not just academic in nature, but also deeply personal and moving, which shines through in every section of the book. This also shines through in her blog, which is truly a nice continuation of what she started with the book. You can interact with her and see links to her most recent articles on her Facebook fan page for the book. Also, be sure to register for the COAST Calls so you don’t miss her live plus question and answer session.

It would make an excellent text book for middle school and older students. I also plan to use portions of the book to help me educate my home schooled elementary age children. I know in my heart of hearts that if I neglect to share this knowledge and wisdom with my own children, that would be a huge Mom-Teacher FAIL on my part.

African American History IS American History. I truly believe this book, and the Walker family, are an American Treasure. Please make the time to read it … but be forewarned that this is a well-researched book, and it will take time to finish it. So, set a goal of how much you want to read every day/week, and then slowly take it in over time so that you can really grasp all of the knowledge. And, if you want some other great folks to help hold you accountable about reading this whole book, join our 90-Day Book Club at BookClub.wahmswin.com.

Also, please be sure to pass the knowledge in this book on to those who you care about. Remember to use the social tools on this page to share this review with your friends and family.

QUESTION – ANSWER IN THE COMMENTS BELOW:

Have you read any of “On Her Own Ground”, yet? What part of this awesome book impacted you the most so far?

Sincerely,

UPDATE: Please note that the wisdom here has potential to save you money and make you money. I want to hear back from you. Let me know if this helped you and how and what results you achieved.

Hoping to make your holidays even happier.

For your home-based business,  if you have been preparing your 2011 taxes and/or working on your 2012 budget, you probably have seen that telecommunication expense (i.e. cell phone) is one of the larger expendable costs, especially if you have a smart phone. You may have decided to look for an alternative, since this is not necessarily an essential expense for your growing business.

Here are five suggestions for how you can max out a “smart enough” phone’s features, along with an unlimited or heavy text messaging plan to get similar smart phone results.

Before you read this list, GET YOUR MIND RIGHT: put aside the desire for the latest, greatest new and shiny object phone and the desire to keep up with your friends’ and family’s flashy / sexy tech lifestyle.

  1. sign up for an unlimited text messaging prepaid plan; T-mobile has a no contract plan for $15 per month where you can use one of your existing older but usable cell phones (This will save you more than half off of most smart phone plans which generally start at $35 per month.)
  2. attach your free google voice account to both your cell phone and home phone numbers – answer calls on your home phone and avoid picking up your cell so that you can stick to just a cell budget of just $15 per month; set your google voice settings: a) to voice screen all calls and b) to show all numbers by caller id so that you don’t miss important calls if you’re out and need to answer your cell
  3. sign up for T-mobile’s referral program, and tell your shiny object / sexy tech friends about it, too and use these funds to pay for your cell budget (Please use my website as your referral code when you sign up: donnamariejohnson.com)

T Mobile Refer a Friend Mozilla Firefox 12232011 35311 AM.bmp 1 Update Money Maker Saver: 5 Ways To Use A Smart Enough Phone To Enhance Your Business In The New Year

  4. manage your social media accounts using an app in your pc/mac browser, instead of paying for a data rate plan to manage the app from your phone – read my free report: click here
  5. set up all of your important email notifications using filters to forward those types of messages to your cell phone as text messages, instead of accessing your cell phone browser and paying data charges

These are just some ideas to get you started. Use your own creativity, and do a bit of research to create a plan that helps you save money, make more money and enhance your efficient management of your business 24/7.

Leave a comment: what have you found that has helped you in this area?

Thanks for reading!

Sincerely,

This is an excerpt preview for you where you can learn more about my story of what I did to break out of my “mind jail”:

As a work at home mom (wahm), you have to push yourself twice as hard as your counterparts who have offices outside of the home. There are many reasons for this, but one of the main reasons is because of disempowering beliefs and behaviors that keep you back from allowing yourself to be great. Mostly, this is subconscious, but you can overcome it if you get help from a professional coach that gets you and what you go through as a wahm.

In a moment, I’ll share my story with you of what I did to break out of…

How many times have you heard successful business people tell you to give other people the opportunity to talk about themselves? If you are an avid business success learner, like me, you may have heard it dozens of times. Now, how often do you really do that when it comes to your online social networking? If you are a solo-preneur – working your business from home on your own – then you may not have found very many effective ways to do this online, yet.

Here are three ways you can make your blog visitors happy and create an environment where they will return over and over again:

1

Open Up Visitors’ Access To Your Blog Comments Area

When you first start blogging, it can be a real challenge for you to know exactly what to do with your comments area. Should you leave it open to all or use some of the anti-spam options to protect your comments area? There are more than a dozen options available for how to handle comments on your blog. I will suggest one NOT to use.

One comment area mistake that you, as a blogger, should beware of:

~avoid using bad captcha plug-ins and widgets to verify commenters are not spammers. I have read complaint after complaint about the glitches that bad captcha (distorted beyond decipherability) can cause; frustrating and driving away good commenters who will just not even bother commenting on future posts. Ask a few friends to try out your commenting tools on your sites and give you feedback about their experience. (You can also run a survey on your blog to ask visitors about their experience with using your comments area.)

Here are some options on how to secure your blog against spam without making it closed off and unfriendly:

~use a more simplified tool similar to captcha; I’ve seen tools that ask you to answer simple questions (e.g., 1+4 = __)

~use a widget or plug-in from a social commenting tool that will handle the spam for you (e.g., commentluv premium, see my comment area below and leave a comment to see how it works)

~install akismet on your wordpress blog (It’s the standard anti-spam app for wordpress.)

~use simple options like allowing frequent commenters to do so without any screening process

~add a comment policy that makes it clear what commenters can expect when they visit and comment

2

Make Yourself More Easily Accessible

One mindset mistake I used to make as a blogger:

~thinking that my blog would turn into a community for commenters to talk with one another. I didn’t realize that you wanted to reach out to ME and to get to know ME. So, knowing this, you should know that it is not enough to provide just a contact form. That is good to have, but it’s only one piece of the puzzle. So, make sure that you leverage good old fashioned ways of connecting along with social networking accessibility:

*create a highly visible area on your blog that contains phone, email and mailing information for your business

*share your regular contact info and social profile links on one aggregated “web business card” page (such as about.me or flavors.me)

*use social plug-ins on your self-hosted blog that will allow people to easily click and access your main social pages

3

Ask Your Readers To Leave A Comment

If you are an experienced blogger you may think this little tip is just too simple, but you would be amazed at how many bloggers never think to ask. So, on that note, I am asking you to…

Share your tips on how you make your blog visitors happy. Please leave a comment below.

When you do comment on this blog at donnamariejohnson.com, you will find that I use a social commenting plug-in to help give you the chance to share about yourself without having to self-promote: simply leave a comment and you’ll be able to select your latest blog post and to share your twitter handle. And every time you visit, your info is automatically shared, and you can update which recent blog post you want other commenters to see. I really love this feature and hope you do, too.

Subscribe to my blog and come back and visit again in another day or two to leave a comment on one of my latests posts.

Thanks for visiting!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Getting personal and business coaching is an essential asset to your growth as a successful woman entrepreneur who works from home.
This is especially true if you have been working to overcome problems with your self-confidence, self-esteem, deep hurts, abuse, or grief.
After experiencing a bad patch in my own life, I enlisted the help of Robin Tramble “My Empowerment Diva”. Since that time, I have made great progress in my goal of starting a community-benefit organization. I know that I would not have been able to do that without the coaching I have received from her.
Also, as a woman who believes in the power of God’s Word and prayer to heal, deliver and set me free, I loved the fact that when I turned to her for help, she was speaking my same language. I know that she is my sister in the Lord, and this has been just as beneficial to me as her expertise as a coach.
If you’d like to learn more about what Robin has to offer, go here to snag her latest free offer that will empower you and help you to start moving forward towards your goal:

If you are like me and enjoy using the awesome automated tools that third parties create to work with twitter, then you need to also do like me and take time out to read twitter’s rules on this. People are having their twitter accounts limited and/or deleted because they are violating rules they don’t even know exist.

Make your life online a bit more “secure” by understanding some key things…

Here is an outline of twitter’s rules about automated posting. The full details are available at the link near the end of this post.

*Automating Your Tweets Based on an Action You’ve Completed (allowed but careful not to bore your audience)

*Automating Your Tweets by Streaming External Information (allowed but make sure you know what is being posted doesn’t break other rules)
-Feeds of your own blog
-Feeds that go through redirects or ad pages
-Feeds for community benefit

*Automatically Tweeting to Trending Topics (can help you or hurt you; adding a human touch ensures it’s done right)
*Mass-creating Automated Accounts (can get you flagged as a potential spammer)
*Automated Advertising Updates (requires specific limits; careful to read the rules!)
*Automated or mass-created affiliate advertising is NOT PERMITTED on Twitter.
–Allowed AD EXCEPTIONS:
~Promoting your own business or website.
~Tweeting unpaid consumer recommendations.
~Tweeting sponsored or compensated links and updates that you have manually posted or approved.

*Automating other Account Actions
-Automated @Replies and Mentions (monitor your posts closely to ad a human touch)
-Automated Retweeting of Other Users (careful not to get labelled as a spammer by others when you do this)
-Automated Following and Un-Following (limited; read the rules here, too)
-Automating Your DMs (Direct Messages – No rule against it, but many people find it annoying / spammy-ish and may delete or ignore you because of automated Direct Messages.)
-Automation that Causes Your Account to Violate the Twitter Rules (again, keep an eye on what’s being posted by third party automation apps; add a human touch to your posts as much as you can)

Read Details Here:

Let me know if this was a helpful outline for you. Leave a comment.

Thanks!
